Prof. Dr. Maria Wimmer

Maria A. Wimmer is vice dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and chairs the research group E-Government at the Department for Information Systems Research. She studied Computer Science at the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria. Since 1999, Maria Wimmer researches and teaches topics of ICT use in the public sector. Her main research and teaching foci are e- government and e-democracy / e-participation, systems analysis, systems design in terms of modelling and managing information and interoperation, processes and knowledge in a comprehensive way. Maria applies a holistic approach, i.e. she studies the use of ICT in the public sector from different perspectives and especially in their interplay, such as the legal and political settings, the processes and organisational structures, the human needs, the data and information to be dealt with, and the technology to be used.

Maria is involved in a number of international and regional research projects developing concepts and solutions for the use of ICT in the public sector. Among the recent projects are the coordination of an international multidisciplinary community of policy modelling (eGovPoliNet), a regional project studying trust in e-participation endeavours (KoMePol) or the development of interoperable cross-border solutions for online public tendering (PEPPOL and eSENS, engaging also with CEN, the European Standardisations Institution).

Maria Wimmer's teaching offers span across lectures on systems analyis, enterprise architecture, public panagement, e-government,e-participation and open government. In the past, she ran e-government and e-participation courses in summer academies, e.g. the Summeracademy 2009 at University of Koblenz-Landau (supported by DAAD). She also holds the enterprise architecture courses in english. Besides the lectures, she offers seminars and practical studies as well as exercises for bachelor and master students. She supervises bachelor-, master- and diploma theses as well as a number of doctoral theses of her staff and external doctoral students (among them currently two students of Tanzania receiving DAAD grants). For the Master programme in Web Science at University of Koblenz-Landau, she offers courses in E-Government, E-Participation and Enterprise Architecture Modeling.

Maria A. Wimmer is involved in a number of jury and evaluation panels for national and international competitions and prizes on e-government. She is a member of professional communities such as GI (chairing the technical committee legal informatics and e-government), IFIP, ACM, IEEE etc. Maria A. Wimmer co-organises the international IFIP e-government conferences (EGOV).

She has published more than 200 papers on e-government and e-participation.
