Dr. Fabian Flöck
Fabian Flöck is a research associate at the Computational Social Science Group at GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne. After receiving his graduate degree in Media Studies / Empirical Sociology from the University of Cologne, he attained his doctorate in the field of computer science from the institute AIFB, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. As an interlude to his academic career, he worked for two years as head product manager for a social network platform in Hamburg, Germany and formerly as a consultant for a creative/Web agency in San Francisco, CA. His research focuses on how to mine the social dynamics in large-scale collaborative online platforms and how they shape the performance of these systems. This includes research work on socio-technical interactions in tagging systems, crowdsourcing solutions, online communities (such as reddit), as well as his main research topic, studying how certain social dynamics in Wikipedia and similar systems can influence content production and how they can be made more transparent. He is also interested in HCI and crowdsourcing research.
